Car-free day in Douala (Cameroon): a great success!

CODATU News Friday 4 January 2019

On November 24th, the Urban Community of Douala organised its first car-free day called “the Street for All”.

This historical day was the achievement of a whole week of intensive work from the Douala Urban Community team as well as from MobiliseYourCity partners who assisted the municipality in the elaboration of its Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP). Different scenarios to improve urban mobility in the city and make it more accessible, integrated and sustainable were submitted.

The initiative contributed to make the population more sensible to the urban mobility stakes through different activities and stands: opening with a bicycle parade in which the Government Delegate participated, presentation to the participants of mobility scenarios and of the main SUMP ambitions and orientations to come, road safety stand, Red Cross, playground…

In view of on the one hand the success of the car-free day and on the other hand the stakes for his city and the population of Douala, the Government Delegate wishes to reiterate the initiative, in particular for the Douala SUMP delivery in the end of the first quarter 2019.

MobiliseYourCity Partnership

Initiated by CODATU, MobiliseYourCity supports local governments in developing countries to plan sustainable urban mobility in order to develop more inclusive, liveable and economically efficient cities and reduce GHG emissions.

100 cities and 20 national governments will be engaged in deep transformational actions through the implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMP) supported by National Sustainable Urban Mobility Policies and Programmes (NUMP). MobiliseYourCity aims to assist cities in their efforts to cut at least 50% of their urban transport related emissions by 2050 compared to business as usual.

With the support of a coalition of international partners (development agencies, urban and transport planning agencies, NGOs and development banks), MobiliseYourCity provides a methodological framework, capacity building and technical assistance, and facilitates access to financing at both local and national levels. The partnership will set up an international reference platform to share best practices about sustainable urban mobility planning and implementation of SUMPs and NUMPs.
